Nobody wants to spend on an AC repair only to have the system die a year later — and nobody wants to buy a whole new unit when a $200 part would've fixed it. The decision comes down to five honest questions. Answer them and the right call is usually obvious.
1. How old is the system?
This is the biggest factor. In South Florida, most air conditioners last about 10 to 15 years — shorter than the national average, because they run long cooling cycles nearly year-round. Coastal homes within a mile of the water see even less, since salt air corrodes outdoor coils and electrical parts faster.
Under 8 years old, lean hard toward repair. Over 12, lean toward replacement. In between, the other four questions decide it.
2. What actually failed — minor or major?
Not all repairs are equal. Some are cheap and worth doing on almost any system; others are expensive enough to tip an older unit into replacement territory.

Major — this is where age matters: compressor failure, evaporator or condenser coil replacement, or a refrigerant leak in the line set. On a system past its first decade, these repairs often cost enough that replacement is the smarter money.
3. The simple math: age × repair cost
There's a rule of thumb the trade uses: multiply the system's age by the repair cost. If the result is well above roughly $5,000, replacement usually makes more sense.
A 6-year-old system with a $400 repair scores 2,400 — fix it, easily. A 13-year-old system with a $1,500 compressor-adjacent repair scores 19,500 — that money is better put toward a new unit that won't strand you again next summer. It's a guide, not gospel, but it captures the instinct correctly.
4. What refrigerant does it use?
If your system runs on R-22, that alone pushes the needle toward replacement. R-22 has been phased out of production, so it's expensive and getting worse every year. And if a tech is adding refrigerant, you almost certainly have a leak — paying premium prices to refill a leaking, aging system is throwing money down a hole. Modern systems use R-410A or newer refrigerants that are cheaper and more efficient.
5. What are your bills and repair history telling you?
Two quieter signals matter. If your electric bill has been creeping up while your comfort drops, an aging, low-efficiency system is bleeding money every month — a newer high-SEER unit can pay back part of its cost in lower bills. And if this is the third service call in two years, you're not maintaining a system anymore, you're subsidizing it. At some point the repairs add up to a down payment on something reliable.
The honest bottom line
Repair when the system is under ~10 years, the failure is minor, and it's on modern refrigerant. Replace when it's past 12, the repair is major or R-22, or you're on your third call in two years.
