The most common shortcut in this industry is cleaning the ductwork and leaving the air handler untouched. Here is why that system re-contaminates itself, and what a complete cleaning actually covers.
Think about the order the air travels. It leaves the blower, passes across the evaporator coil, moves into the supply plenum, out through the duct runs, into the room, back through the returns, and around again. The ductwork is the middle of that loop. It is not the start of it.
Which is why cleaning only the ducts is a job that undoes itself. If the coil and blower wheel are loaded with debris and you leave them that way, the first time the system cycles it pushes material straight back into the runs somebody just spent four hours cleaning. The homeowner paid for a result that lasted until the thermostat called for cooling.
A squirrel-cage blower wheel moves air because each fin has a specific curved shape. Debris packs into the concave face of those fins and gradually fills the curve. The wheel still spins at the same speed, but it is no longer the same wheel — the geometry that made it move air is buried.
This is one of the most common causes of weak airflow we find, and one of the least diagnosed, because it is completely invisible without opening the blower compartment. A homeowner reports that one end of the house never gets cold. Somebody adds refrigerant, or blames the ductwork, or recommends a bigger system. Meanwhile the actual answer is a wheel that needs each fin worked individually with a brush.
An evaporator coil transfers heat through the surface area of tightly spaced aluminium fins. Dust bonded across those fins does two things at once: it insulates the surface so less heat moves, and it restricts the gaps so less air passes. The system compensates the only way it can, by running longer to reach the same temperature.
South Florida makes this worse than almost anywhere. Humidity above 70% for much of the year means the coil is wet nearly all the time it runs, and a wet coil is exactly the condition dust needs to stick rather than pass through. That is why coils here load up in a few years rather than a decade.
On the estate job in these photographs the coils were pulled out of the air handlers entirely. That is not always necessary — plenty of coils clean in place — but when buildup is heavy enough that the back face of the fins cannot be reached, removal is the only honest way to do it. Coil cleaning done from one side is half a job charged as a whole one.
The question that separates quotes
"Does this price include the evaporator coil, the blower wheel and the drain line?" A quote covering ducts only is not cheaper than a complete one. It is a different, smaller job that leaves the two components most responsible for airflow and efficiency exactly as they were.
Every hour your AC runs in this climate it is pulling moisture out of the air, and all of it lands in the drain pan. A system that has been running with a dirty coil has been feeding that pan debris along with the water. The line starts to restrict, then it slimes up, and eventually it backs up — usually in July, usually into a ceiling. Flushing it during a cleaning visit takes minutes. Discovering it after the fact costs drywall.
Industry standards are explicit that cleaning applies to the whole HVAC system rather than the ducts in isolation. In practice that means:
That last item matters more than it sounds. Cleaning without measuring is cleaning on faith. Taking a reading before and after is how you know whether anything actually changed — and occasionally it is how you discover that the real problem was never dirt at all, but a duct that is leaking or disconnected.
Work out the arithmetic. A complete cleaning on an average South Florida house is several hours of two people's labour, plus equipment, plus a truck. There is no version of that which is profitable at $99. The number exists to get someone through your door, and it changes once they are inside — which is a sales technique, not a price.

Supply and return ducts, the supply and return plenums, every register and grille, the evaporator coil, the blower motor and wheel assembly, the drain pan and condensate line, and a fresh filter. On systems with heat strips or a heat exchanger, those get inspected as well. The defining test is whether every surface the airflow touches has been addressed.
Because the evaporator coil and blower wheel sit downstream of the ductwork. If they are loaded with debris and you clean only the ducts, the first cooling cycle pushes material off the blower wheel and back into runs you just finished. You have paid for a cleaning that undoes itself within days.
It is one of the most commonly skipped components and one of the most consequential. Most coils can be cleaned in place. When buildup is heavy enough that the back side of the fins cannot be reached, the coil comes out — that is what happened on the Boca Raton job pictured here. A coil cleaned from one face only is a coil half cleaned, and the difference shows up in airflow readings.
A system that has been running dirty almost always has a condensate drain starting to restrict. In South Florida humidity that pan is wet nearly year round. Flushing it during the visit is cheap; discovering it during a July overflow, with water in a ceiling, is not.
Yes, and it should — it is more labour and more equipment access. The relevant comparison is not against a cheaper duct-only quote but against paying twice.
